Kashmir beckons!

Kashmir has 4 seasons, not 5 which are spring, summer, autumn and winter and duration of each season doesn't match with the rest of India, mostly. This is because the Pir Panjal mountain range shapes the southern, south western contour of Kashmir in such a way that monsoon clouds get restricted while pouring into Kashmir valley. So, it's basically a rain shadow zone where June to September is summer. July sees occasional light drizzle at the dusk. Kashmir holds exceptionally stunning views in all the seasons, and obviously changes with each season. So, it makes even more sense to visit Kashmir once in each season.

If your phone has a Prepaid SIM card, then it will stop working as soon as you enter Jammu. But don't worry, you can buy a local Prepaid SIM card and use it during your stay. For that, you need to carry official documents like Aadhaar card or Passport etc. The procedure is simple and hassle free, though and this SIM will have a 20 days validity. If you have a Postpaid connection, then you can use it in Kashmir. Jio, Airtel or BSNL Postpaid works most of the places, Vodafone Postpaid works only in Srinagar.

• Kashmir essentials: Kashmir is great in every season, but this great destination also requires great planning. Kashmir is geographically diverse and some of the places are a tad more difficult than others. Here are some things to consider before planning a trip to Kashmir.
• Check travel advisories: Most important thing is to stay updated on the current situation and any travel advisories related to weather or security issues.
• Carry necessary permits: You do not need an Inner Line Permit or any such permits to visit Kashmir, but some Indo-Pak border regions where there’s trekking, may have permit requirements.
• Pack accordingly: Pack smartly for Kashmir, as weather can vary significantly. If you are planning a winter trip, pack enough warm clothing and warm, comfortable shoes.
• Carry important IDs: This is for anywhere in the world, not just in Kashmir. Always carry a copy of an important government ID with you. Keep both physical and digital copies.
• Carry important medications: In case of any specific health conditions, it’s always good to carry enough medications. The area where you stay may or may not have a chemist shop with your specific medicines.
• Carry enough cash: Kashmir may not have as many ATMs as larger cities, and many places of business may not accept online transactions. Carry enough cash for the duration of your stay.
• Educate yourselves about local customs: Nothing’s worse than being a sore thumb in a new place. Familiarise yourself with the local customs and etiquette, this includes appropriate clothing, greetings, and behaviour in public spaces.
• Transportation: If you are not driving to Kashmir, it’s better to pre-arrange your transportation. You can always go for local transportation but let’s be honest, visitors are, more often than not, on a fixed schedule. Pre-arranged cabs might be a better option.
• Sightseeing plans: Research well in advance places that you want to visit in Kashmir and things you plan to do. Having a proper itinerary helps plan the day and also manage finances.
