Meghalaya is an all-weather destination. However, the best time to visit is during the summer (April to June) and during the Autumn (October to November) when the weather remains cool and sunny, perfect for outdoor activities.

No travelogue about Meghalaya would be complete without mentioning the gastronomical extravaganza. The 11 districts fall under 3 hill divisions of Garo, Khasi and Jaintiya. Jadoh, variations of Ja ie rice and doh ie meat (sometimes chicken or fish) is the staple food across Meghalaya and sesame plays an important role in their cuisine. The Garos love green veggies, yam apart from hugely abundant fish and meat infused ja doh. Khasi and Jaintiya have nearly similar cuisines, though Jaintiyas love to use sasame more in their cooking. The smoking process to preserve meat has been in vogue since ages and now it has become intrinsic to Khasi delicacies. Simple yet robust, Khasi cuisine is packed with surprise punches. The ja doh, ja stem, doh khlieh, tungrymbai, tungtap, doh ngiong are hugely popular in the local eateries JaCcha (for ja=rice and cha=tea) and the Kong shops around Shillong (Kong = sister, as these shops are run by women). Lots of fresh local fruits and vegetables are also avaible in the markets. The jing bam sells snacks like rice cakes steamed within bamboo hollows, rice malpua etc. We would recommend you to head to Trattoria. This is a small eatery in Police Bazar and serves delectable Jadoh and other Khasi dishes. You can also check out the cafes in Shillong. They serve great coffee and food items.

BSNL, Jio and Airtel work better in Meghalaya. Vodafone is little bit up and down. Overall network is unreliable, especially in places like Cherrapunji, Mawlynnong, Mawphlang and Nongriat.

Meghalaya is one of the safest places to travel in India, especially for solo women travellers. Meghalaya follows a matrilineal society, which means that the family lineage is taken from the mother’s side. Women are empowered and crimes against women are not usually seen. The locals are helpful to tourists and so is the local police force.
