Acres upon acres of scenic tea gardens, sunlit and caressed by cool fresh breeze and pine forests cajoling the serpentine paths into more solitude and serenity - that's Gopaldhara. Wild flowers, fragrant orchids, lots of birds, streams and rivulets here and there and peace all around, Gopaldhara at 4500 ft is one beautiful hamlet tucked into the Darjeeling hills.
The Gopaldhara tea gardens produce some of the finest Darjeeling tea, like the black tea, first flush, second flush, white tea, oolong tea etc. There's a shop-cum-restaurant inside the tea estate from where you can take them home for your loved ones too. A walk into the village would be a heartwarming experience. The Golpahar viewpoint nearby is excellent for watching sunrise and sunset with Kanchenjunga forming an ethereal backdrop. Mirik is about 7 km and Darjeeling, 39 km from Gopaldhara.
There aren't much staying options in Gopaldhara, which makes it better for a quiet getaway. But this cosy homestay near the tea gardens is undoubtedly the best. It's unique architecture is as eye catching as the interiors, giving it an elegant colonial look. The pine wood rooms are tastefully decorated and spacious with attatched private balcony and western style bathroom. One interesting feature is the inter-connected twin rooms on the first floor, ideal for a family of 4 persons. The Golpahar View Point is about 4/5 min walk from the homestay.
The hosts are very attentive, warm and caring. Hospitality, cleanliness, food, sanitization, location wise this homestay has excellent reviews. Home made local delicacies are served using fresh, organically grown local products.
Gopaldhara is about 64 kms from both NJP station and Bagdogra airport, and will take about 2 and half hours by car to reach. You can book a car from Siliguri or NJP to Gopaldhara. Alternatively, you can take a shared jeep from Siliguri to Mirik. From Mirik, you have to take a private car to reach Gopaldhara.
You can also come from Darjeeling, the distance to Gopaldhara is 39 kms and will take about 1.5 hours by taxi. You need to come up to Ghum (8 kms) and take a right turn towards Sukhia Pokhri and then approach Gopaldhara. The homestay can also arrange a private car for you if you let them know beforehand.
